Capture Management: Independent Federal Agencies

Independent agencies of the United States federal government are those agencies that exist outside of the federal executive branch. More specifically, the term is used to describe agencies that, while constitutionally part of the executive branch, are independent of presidential control, usually because the president’s power to dismiss the agency head or a member is limited. These agencies are generally headed by a commission or a board.

Accordingly, U.S. independent federal agencies generally fall into one of two categories: Independent Executive Agencies and Independent Regulatory Agencies.

Dependent on the political climate the current administration’s addenda, the number of independent federal agencies can fluctuate. Some of the most recent independent federal agencies we have assisted clients with include the:

  • National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Department of Transportation (DOT)
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
